In the Star Trek future, there is a great new way to chat! Nobody has to know who you are, and you never have to pick up a phone!

The future is now!

The Tech:
The technology for this system already exists. All that has to be done is to equip wireless routers to automatically communicate with a generic device worn on your clothing. This device is calibrated by tapping its shiny metallic surface, which is a form of fingerprint recognition, then say something into the room in any direction, which is a form of voiceprint recognition, and in addition to that it can detect your body, which is a form of biometric recognition. The generic nature of the communication device allows for you to have one attached to any article of clothing, activated upon biometric signature or other calibration methods.

Your friends or associates may load your fingerprint, voiceprint, or biometric data into their online address book and call you using a key word. They may want to call you using a special password system. Sometimes, you may be contacted by your unique user name, which can even be your name, perhaps with a serial number to differentiate which one you are with that name.

The routers would be most conveniently built into the ceiling of every room in a corporation. When your generic device, which can only transfer audio, is in the room, the video chat devices will be activated if someone wants to speak to you face to face. The video chat devices may be placed many to each wall, seamlessly hidden in walls. They can measure your “generic communication device / locator beacon / transmitter” signal to determine which video device is nearest to you, and it may show your image and other information you would need in order to answer the call, unless you have restricted this information. Your locator beacon can be used to simulate the telephone ringing for the call instead of using the video device itself. Making the signal independent of the video communication device makes it easy to “walk and talk” if you are on a schedule.

Additionally, the advanced tracking system can be used as a form of security. Only one of you can be wearing the biometric device at a time, making it impossible for someone to break into your home if you are elsewhere. TheĀ  tracking software can determine whether it is realistic that you could move from place to place, making it impossible for someone in one country/city/building to access personal files while you are somewhere else. Automatic restricted entry doors can be seamlessly linked to the system to allow you to pass through. Another benefit of the biometric data is for physician monitoring and use of the “dead-man switch” to signal emergency response.

Barriers to worldwide adoption:
There are really not many barriers anymore. One paradigm that needs to be removed is restricted or private wireless networks. The technology for biometrics, voiceprint, and fingerprinting in one small flat device may still need some further development in order to get smaller and cheaper. Video chat devices are still over $100, which may make proliferation of public chat devices difficult, but that will soon change.
